There's a question I get asked fairly regularly from people who've come to this world through tea leaf reading, and who've started to feel curious about other divination practices: what else is out there? And my answer, increasingly, is to introduce them to charm casting.

Charm casting is one of those practices that sounds slightly mysterious until you understand how it works — and then it suddenly makes perfect sense. It's tactile, intuitive, visually rich, and extraordinarily flexible. And it has a history that stretches back further than almost any other form of divination still practiced today.

What Is Charm Casting?

At its most basic, charm casting is the art of throwing a collection of small objects — charms — onto a surface and reading meaning from where and how they land. The surface you cast onto (the casting mat or cloth) is divided into zones, each with a different meaning. The relationship between where a charm lands, which zone it's in, and how it relates to the other charms around it builds the reading.

The charms themselves are miniature three-dimensional symbols. A tiny key. A small bird. A crescent moon. A heart. A ladder. How Is It Different from Tea Leaf Reading?

They share a lot of philosophical DNA, but in practice they feel quite different. Tea leaf reading is quieter — it happens after the ritual of making and drinking tea, in the intimate space of looking into a single cup. Charm casting is more immediate, more kinetic. The physical act of gathering the charms in your hands, shaking them gently, and casting them out onto the mat has an energy that some people find very powerful.

Tea leaf reading is monochromatic and requires a trained eye to identify shapes in the leaves.
