How Tea Leaf Reading and Scrying Are the Same Practice

by Karin Dalton-Smith 07 Aug 2025

Hello everyone,

A couple of years ago I ran a big zoom class for a lovely bunch of Chinese students over zoom where I taught tea leaf reading the various forms of scrying, using crystals, black mirror work candle wax and oil and water.  It was a fabulous class that went over several sessions and I thought this is a great topic to discuss as so many people don’t know what scrying is.  So I thought this may be a great topic to share with you all.

How Tea Leaf Reading and Scrying Are the Same Practice

Many people are familiar with tea leaf reading as a form of divination that involves interpreting symbols in a cup of tea. However, the art of scrying is often less understood, even though it shares many similarities with tea leaf reading. Scrying is the practice of gazing into reflective or opaque surfaces, such as wax, crystal balls, black mirrors, or water, and seeing images or symbols that reveal hidden messages. Both practices rely on the ability to see symbols in a modality and interpret the stories they tell.

Understanding how tea leaf reading and scrying are fundamentally the same can deepen your spiritual practice. It opens up new ways to connect with your intuition, receive guidance, and notice signs from the universe in everyday life. Whether you are using your tea leaf reading products, scrying tools, or simply observing the natural patterns around you, both practices tap into the same core skill: seeing symbols and stories in the images that appear.

The Common Thread: Seeing Symbols and Interpreting Stories

At their core, both tea leaf reading and scrying are about seeing symbols in a modality and stringing together stories. In tea leaf reading, the symbols are the shapes and patterns formed by the leaves in your cup. In scrying, the symbols can be images in a crystal ball, wax, water, or even reflections in a black mirror. The key is to notice the images, shapes, or patterns and interpret their meanings based on your intuition and knowledge.

For example, in tea leaf reading, a cluster of leaves that resemble birds or animals might suggest messages about freedom or guidance. In scrying, a reflection in your black mirror might reveal a figure or landscape that signifies a message about your path or subconscious mind. Both practices involve focusing your awareness on the images and allowing your intuition to guide you toward understanding the messages they carry.

Scrying in Everyday Life

Scrying is not limited to formal tools or ritualistic settings. It can happen naturally in everyday life. For example, when you walk out your front door and notice the leaves on your porch forming patterns that resemble animals or objects, these are signs from the universe. These images are messages that your subconscious or spiritual guides are trying to communicate.

This process is the same as traditional scrying, seeing symbols in natural or everyday images and interpreting their significance. These signs often contain hidden messages or guidance about upcoming opportunities, challenges, or spiritual lessons. Paying attention to these patterns and symbols in your environment can enhance your intuition and deepen your connection to the unseen worlds.

How Tea Leaf Reading and Scrying Are the Same Practice

Both tea leaf reading and scrying are forms of divination that rely on visual symbolism. They use different modalities, tea leaves versus reflective surfaces, but share the same core principles:

  • Focus and Intention: Both practices require focusing your mind and setting a clear intention to receive messages.
  • Seeing Symbols: Whether in tea leaves, wax, water, or reflections, the images you see are symbols that carry meaning.
  • Interpretation: The stories you string together from these symbols reveal insights about your life, your subconscious, or your future.
  • Trusting Your Intuition: Success in both methods depends on trusting your intuitive impressions and personal associations.

Many practitioners find that developing their skills in one modality enhances their ability in others. For example, mastering tea leaf reading can improve your ability to interpret images in water or wax, and vice versa.

Using Your Products to Deepen Your Practice

If you already enjoy your tea leaf reading products, such as your specially designed tea cups, reading cards, or charm casting kits, you are already working with symbols and stories. Incorporating scrying techniques into your practice can expand your abilities.

For example, you might use your crystal ball or black mirror to practice scrying and see what images appear. Pay attention to the symbols that emerge and how they relate to your life or questions. Similarly, observing patterns in water or wax can unlock new insights and deepen your understanding of your subconscious messages.

Practical Tips for Connecting Tea Leaf Reading and Scrying

  • Set an Intention: Before beginning your practice, clarify what you are seeking or open yourself to guidance.
  • Focus on the Images: Whether in tea leaves or in a reflective surface, concentrate on what you see without rushing to interpret.
  • Trust Your Impressions: Your intuition is your best guide. Trust what you feel or see when interpreting symbols.
  • Keep a Journal: Record your images and insights to track your progress and notice recurring symbols.
  • Practice Daily: Regular practice enhances your ability to see symbols and interpret stories from your environment and tools.

Final Thoughts

Tea leaf reading and scrying are not separate practices but different expressions of the same innate ability to see symbols and stories in images. Both methods use visual symbolism to connect you with your subconscious mind, divine guidance, and the universe’s messages. Whether you are gazing into your tea cup, a crystal ball, or observing natural patterns, you are engaging in sacred art that can bring clarity, insight, and inspiration.

By understanding that these practices are fundamentally the same, you can explore new modalities and develop your intuitive skills across different forms of divination. Your tea leaf reading products, scrying tools, and everyday environment all become gateways to the unseen worlds.

Begin noticing the symbols around you today. Trust your intuition and start stringing together the stories in the images you see. Your guidance and insights await.

Where there is a symbol, there is a story waiting to be told.

Where there is tea, there is love ❤️...Karin xx
