Spotlight on Rare Tea-Leaf Symbols and How to Read Them

by Karin Dalton-Smith 06 Jul 2025

Hello Tea Lovers,

I hope. You have all had a fabulous weekend.  Here in Melbourne, Australia we are in the middle of winter and Melbourne has been very cold so it’s certainly been tea drinking weather here, for me at least.

I thought this may be an interesting topic for you this week and it’s a common question I am often asked is about the tough symbols.

Tea-leaf reading, or tasseomancy, frequently brings to mind familiar shapes such as hearts, birds and keys. Yet some of the most profound messages emerge from rare or unexpected symbols. In this post we shine a light on uncommon symbols such as, swans, labyrinths, dragons and hourglasses, as well as more challenging signs like graves and a hangman’s noose. You will learn how to interpret these potent images and discover tips for trusting your intuition when chart references fall short, whether you are using teacups, tea cards or tea leaf reading charm kits.

Pictured here is a vintage collection of Tea leaf reading charms that were often called, “cake charms”.

Uncommon Symbols and Their Meanings

  1. Swan
Swans symbolise grace, transformation and inner beauty. In tea leaf reading a swan suggests you are entering a period of personal growth or that hidden talents are about to emerge. Swans pair for life, so seeing this symbol may also herald enduring bonds or the need to honour a commitment. When you spot a swan in your tea leaves or in a charm cast, consider how elegance and poise can serve you now.

  2. Labyrinth
The labyrinth symbol resembles a winding maze, representing a complex journey or inner quest. When you encounter a labyrinth in tea leaf reading it invites you to embrace twists and turns rather than seeking a straight path. This symbol encourages patience, self-reflection and trust in the process of discovery. If your tea cards or tea leaf reading charm kits reveal a labyrinth, reflect on which aspect of your life feels maze-like and what steps will guide you forward.

  3. Dragon
Dragons stand for power, protection and creativity, but they are a mythical creature.  In tea leaf reading a dragon often indicates that you need to face your fears and it is a symbol of awakening or that you need to assert yourself. This image may signal a time for bold action or the discovery of untapped resources needed to overcome obstacles. If you see a dragon among your charms, let it remind you to call on courage in facing challenges.

  4. Hourglass
An hourglass evokes the passage of time and the importance of timing. When this symbol appears it points to deadlines, the need for patience or the reminder that events unfold in their own rhythm. In a tea leaf reading charm kit spread the hourglass may advise you not to rush decisions and to value each moment. Use its message to practice stillness or plan your next step according to natural timing.

Harsh Symbols as Agents of Change

Some images may feel unsettling at first, yet they rarely predict literal death. Instead they herald the end of a difficult situation and the opportunity for renewal.

  1. Grave or Tombstone
A grave or tombstone symbol can seem ominous but in tea leaf reading it usually represents closure. You may be ready to lay old fears, regrets or unhealthy patterns to rest. This symbol invites you to honour the past while stepping forward unburdened. When paired with positive charms like flowers or birds it emphasises healing and new beginnings.

  2. Hangman’s Noose
The hangman’s noose is one of the most challenging symbols yet its message is seldom fatal. It suggests that a period of restriction, negativity or self limiting belief is drawing to a close. You may have felt bound by guilt, regret or unhelpful habits. If this symbol appears in your tea charm casting it encourages you to release these constraints and embrace freedom of thought and emotion. Look for supportive symbols nearby to confirm that transformation rather than disaster is at hand.

Trusting Your Intuition When Chart References Fall Short

Symbol guides and tea-leaf reading charm kit instructions provide a valuable starting point, but rare symbols often carry personal nuances beyond printed definitions. To interpret these images confidently, cultivate practices that strengthen your intuitive connection.

• Create Space for Reflection
Begin each session by clearing your mind with a moment of silence or a breathing exercise. A calm, centred state allows subtle impressions to surface.

• Observe Symbol Context
Notice how a rare symbol interacts with others in your cup, cards or charm spread. Direction, proximity and pattern can reveal narrative threads that guide interpretation.

• Record Your Thoughts
Keep an intuition journal dedicated to rare symbols. When you encounter a labyrinth or a noose note your initial thoughts, the question you asked and any subsequent developments. Over time you will discern personal patterns.

• Ask Open Ended Questions
Instead of seeking a yes or no answer, invite the symbol to tell a story. Ask yourself, “What lesson does the dragon offer me right now?” Open questions encourage richer insights.

• Blend Guidebooks with Feeling
Consult your guidebooks that come with my products to grasp traditional meanings then trust the emotion or image that stirs within you first. If the hourglass makes you feel calm and patient, place more emphasis on that aspect of the message.

• Practise Regularly
Rare symbols are less frequent so the more often you use your tea leaf reading charm kits or tea card decks the more comfortable you become with their meanings. Set the intention to spot one uncommon shape and note how it appears.

Integrating Rare Symbols into Your Practice

When rare symbols appear in your tasseomancy sessions honour their significance by blending traditional guidance with intuitive insights. Try these approaches:

  1. Symbol Pairing
Pair a rare symbol with a common one to clarify its message. A swan alongside a heart can emphasise emotional transformation in a relationship.

  2. Themed Spreads
Design a charm layout or tea card spread that highlights rare symbols. Label an empty position “Rare Symbol” and interpret the card or charm that fills it as a special focus for growth.

  3. Affirmations and Actions
Translate the symbol’s meaning into an affirmation or action step. For a grave symbol you might affirm, “I release what no longer serves me,” and identify a concrete way to let go.
