The Meaning of Common Charm Casting Symbols: A Beginner's Guide

The moment a charm lands on the casting mat, it begins to speak.

Every tiny object in your collection carries a symbolic language that has been building across human culture for centuries. The heart, the key, the bird, the anchor: these images appear in our dreams, our stories, our poetry, and our art because they carry meanings that transcend language and culture.

Learning the language of charm casting symbols is one of the most satisfying parts of developing a divination practice. And while every reader eventually develops their own personal vocabulary, there is a rich body of traditional meanings to draw on as a foundation.

Here is a guide to the most common charm casting symbols and what they have to say.

Symbols of the Heart and Relationships

The Heart

Perhaps the most universally recognised symbol in any divination system. The heart speaks of love in all its forms: romantic love, self-love, familial love, and the love that underpins friendship and community. In a reading, a heart that lands clearly and face up is almost always a positive and affirming message about matters of the heart.

Pay attention to what surrounds the heart in your cast. A heart near a key suggests that love is opening a door. A heart near an anchor speaks of deep, stable love. A heart near a storm charm might point to emotional turbulence in a relationship.

The Ring

A ring symbolises cycles, commitment, completion, and eternity. It can speak of a relationship reaching a new level of commitment, a cycle completing itself, or a promise being honoured. In some traditions, the ring is also associated with inheritance and with things coming full circle.

The Rose

Beauty, love, passion, and new beginnings. A rose in the reading often indicates that something lovely is entering the querent's life or that matters of the heart are opening in a fresh, fragrant direction. It can also speak of the importance of self-care and of tending to what is beautiful in one's own life.

Symbols of Movement and Change

The Bird

One of the most active symbols in any charm casting set. Birds speak of freedom, movement, messages arriving, and news on its way. The direction a bird faces can be meaningful: a bird facing left may speak of something coming from the past, while a bird facing right points toward the future. A bird in flight suggests rapid movement and change.

The Key

Access, solutions, and the unlocking of what has previously been closed or hidden. When a key appears in a reading, it often signals that the answer to a question is closer than it seems, or that a new door is about to open. Keys paired with lock charms speak of something finally being resolved.

The Anchor

Stability, security, and groundedness. When life feels turbulent or uncertain, the anchor arriving in a reading is a reassuring message that something solid is available to you. It can also speak of a need to stay rooted rather than drifting, or of the importance of identifying what truly anchors you.

Symbols of Challenge and Transformation

The Storm or Lightning Bolt

Sudden change, disruption, and the kind of sharp revelation that arrives whether you are ready for it or not. A storm charm in a reading is not necessarily negative, though it rarely speaks of smooth sailing. It often signals that something is about to shift quickly and that flexibility and resilience will be called for.

The Skull or Crossbones

In many divinatory traditions, skull imagery speaks of endings and transformation rather than literal death. It is often a symbol of release and of the completion of a cycle that has run its natural course. What needs to die so that something new can be born?

The Broken Circle or Severed Ring

The completion of a relationship, contract, or cycle. An ending that has been a long time coming. This charm invites honesty about what is no longer serving you and courage around allowing it to close.

Symbols of Abundance and Fortune

The Coin or Money Bag

Financial energy, abundance, and material matters coming into focus. This charm can speak of money arriving, of the need to attend to practical financial matters, or of a shift in the querent's relationship with abundance and value.

The Star

One of the most positive symbols in the set. Stars speak of hope, alignment, divine guidance, and wishes moving toward realisation. A star in a reading often arrives as an encouragement: you are on the right path, keep going.

The Crown

Success, authority, achievement, and recognition. The crown speaks of reaching the top of something, of being seen and acknowledged, and of the kind of confidence and leadership that comes from genuinely earned experience.

Reading Symbols in Context

The individual meanings above are a foundation, not a final answer. In charm casting, context is everything.

A key sitting right beside a heart tells a different story than a key sitting beside a storm. The distance between charms, which zone of the mat they land in, and whether they land face up or face down all contribute layers of meaning to the core symbolic message.

Over time, you will also develop personal meanings for the charms in your specific collection. These personal correspondences are not less valid than traditional meanings. They are more valid, because they have been forged in the specific relationship between you and your tools.
